Biography
Vanessa Fernandez is one of Melbourne’s finest Jazz & Soul singers. Her voice eases blissfully through the realms of Jazz, Blues and Soul, creating a distinct and compelling sound. Often compared to the great singers with whom she draws inspiration, Vanessa maintains an individual presence, exuding a strong, persuasive tone.
Priding herself on reinterpretation, adopting her own Jazz, Blues inflections, Vanessa brings new life to the much loved classics of contemporary and traditional music. If you enjoy the sounds of Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Aretha Fraklin, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Sade and Sting you will find Vanessa’s duo instantly appealing. A collaboration between voice and guitar that also extends to a 3 or 4 piece band.
The neo-Jazz sounds of Vanessa are a perfect backdrop to any wedding or corporate function, both beautiful and memorable.
Vanessa is a consummate performer and an accomplished singer/songwriter. Her original writing is largely expressed throughout her debut album ‘Unsung’ (Fernandez & Wright) released in 2009 with guitarist Steve Wright. These beautiful songs were brought to life with the accompaniment of Melbourne’s finest Jazz musicians. The album was launched to a full house at Melbourne’s premier Jazz venue, Bennett’s Lane and received rave reviews both locally and internationally. Unsung hit #32 on the CMJ Jazz Music Charts in the US and #42 on the Jazz Week World Charts.
