What To Know When It Comes To Music Band Hire

June 26, 2022 By blueaven

band_hire_blog

You might have recently concluded that you need a band instead of a disc jockey (DJ) or a solo singer for your event. However, you know that this choice can come with a few challenges. After all, hiring a live band is a big decision. Read more on what to know when it comes to music band hire.

Genre

Australia has a diverse and rich music. It has indigenous, folk, bush, country, world, roots, and contemporary. And the continent even has dedicated music festivals for each genre and type of music it has. So, it makes sense that you choose a band that can play the music genre you want to be played on your event. (1)

Bands that often offer their services for hire are “variety” or “cover bands”–they’re sometimes referred to as party pleasers. Most live bands in Perth are of this type, and they can play most music you’ll need for your event. They are often willing to learn and play any song you have in mind and can even entertain your guests and accept song requests.

However, there will be times when you have a crowd that prefers a particular genre. Put this into mind as sometimes you should have a metal band to cover metal songs or ska bands to cover ska.

Samples

When hiring a band, especially from a pool of the best live bands Penrith has, the fastest way to gauge whether or not they’re good is to hear a sample of their music. Thankfully, it’s easy to get a sample of a band’s performance or music nowadays. You can ask them for their videos from video-sharing sites. You can also ask them if they have uploaded their music on an audio-sharing site.

If the band is traditional and doesn’t upload their stuff online, you can ask for their sample compact disc (CD) or even mixtape–yes, some bands still use these media. They are often willing to share their long plays (LPs or full albums) or extended plays (EPs or partial albums) with clients. Note that before, most LPs and EPs exclusively referred to vinyl records. However, both LPs and EPs are acceptable in music CDs, DVDs (digital optical discs), and even digital downloads nowadays. (2)

Aside from knowing the genre they play and their skill level, their live band singles can tell you what the band thinks is good music. Most of the time, it’s good to hire a band that matches your taste in sound.

Gigs

While samples can let you know a band’s taste and genre, their gigs can let you know how they perform live. Ask the band if they have a gig scheduled that you can watch, and see if they play in popular events like the 9 Lives Festival Melbourne. For those unfamiliar, the 9 Lives Festival is a music event that happens on a single day with three stages for music lovers. (3)

Aside from seeing them perform in live bands events, knowing your prospective band’s gig schedule allows you to have an insight into how much people love them. The more gigs they have, the higher the chance they’re a crowd favourite.

Setup and equipment

You shouldn’t forget about the equipment. It’s a fact that the best live bands in the world will always have and prefer using their own equipment. However, not all of them are willing to bring all their stuff to a gig or job. If they do, they will ask for extra.

In some cases, you may have already hired an organiser or an events place with all the audio rigs for your event. If you’re in that situation, you wouldn’t want the band to waste the money you already spent for equipment available on the site.

Space

You should also consider how much space they need. After all, some bands may have a lot of members and may require a large platform to perform. And again, you should consider how much equipment they would need.

For instance, you wouldn’t want a band with an ensemble to play inside a small function hall. Aside from the place being cramped, the amount of music they could generate might be too loud.

Miscellaneous needs

To make sure nothing goes awry in the event, you should make sure you know if they have any special needs or demands. Note that some bands may require some additional electrical outlets, food, and other equipment to perform to their fullest during an event.

Where do bands play worst live performance ever? Try to find out the answer to this question. After all, if you’re in a place known for having a lousy sound profile, be sure to ask the band you’ll hire if they need specific equipment and setup to prevent the venue from ruining the event or their performance.

Price

Of course, you shouldn’t forget the price. Some bands may demand a flat rate or an hourly rate. Know about this as early as possible, as this can easily make you decide if you want the band.

Also, know if they charge extra–like having to pay additional for every song request they play on stage. Aside from that, they may also charge more if they need to travel far, bring their equipment, hire sound persons, get additional members, and do other things outside their expected band duties.

Conclusion

Those are the things you need to know before you hire a band. Learning about these topics can help you determine if the band is the right group for your event and prevent any potential drama or technical problems during the performance you’re asking for.

Questions to Ask Your Venue Before Hiring a Wedding Band

April 11, 2022 By blueaven

Hiring a wedding band can be an exciting experience, but it’s important to make sure that everything is in order before signing any contracts. Every venue has different rules and regulations when it comes to live music, for example, so it’s important to make sure that your band is a perfect fit.

In this article, our team at Blue Avenue Entertainment have compiled what questions to ask a wedding venue before hiring your band.

Things to Ask Your Wedding Venue

Is Amplified Live Music Allowed?

You might have found the most beautiful venue on the market, but it’s possible strict noise pollution laws have left them unable to play live music. This may be an aspect of their license agreement, and can take a variety of forms, such as only prohibiting amplified music, permitting unplugged acoustic options, but not allowing large ensemble bands. This is one of the key things to ask your wedding venue before progressing with a band.

Is There a Sound Limiter at the Venue?

A sound limiter works through a connected microphone that gauges the volume of a performance. Should the volume exceed a set limit for even just a few seconds, all power travelling to the equipment and instruments will be cut off. They are handy when unruly musicians go rogue and start blasting speakers, however some bands maintain a volume threshold, and will not perform with restrictive sound limiters present.

Is a PA System Available?

A venue with its own sound system can prove either helpful or a hindrance to your wedding band. If the specs check out, it will save the musicians having to transport and assemble their own equipment. Unfortunately, many bands will prefer to use their own PA system, limiting your options if this is not possible.

What Space is Allocated for Musicians?

While you might have free reign with the level of noise you can make, you must also appreciate how much space your wedding band will require before booking. This should be one of the first questions you ask of your wedding venue. If they don’t have specifics, you should aim for a space that offers a metre in width for each member of the band, as well as three metres for the drummer and their equipment.

Think also about the placement of the dance floor – the closer to the stage, the better!

Will There Be Sufficient Access to a Power Supply?

This may seem a redundant question to ask a modern wedding venue, but it can prove crucial for your particular wedding setup. For example, should you wish to hold the reception outside, what will be required for the band to receive electricity for their equipment? If you are rearranging an indoor set-up, will there be an array of unsightly extension cords creating a tripping hazard across the dancefloor? Be sure to understand the venue’s capacity to deliver a power source, whether that is directly from outlets, via generators, or a more creative solution, and how that works for your band.

Will the Musicians Receive Food and Drink?

Wedding bands will often have inclusions within their contacts stipulating the provision of food and drinks. Many venues might treat this as a given, but to prevent any uncomfortable issues on the big day, be sure to double-check they have the facilities to accommodate well beforehand. If not, this may be something to raise with the band before booking.

Is There Enough Room For the Band to Park and Unload Their Equipment?

If your big day is held far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this might not be one of the more pressing things to ask your wedding venue. If not, be sure there is a legal space available for the wedding band to unload their equipment. Convenience is preferred as there is likely a lot to transport amid their instruments, speakers and more. Should parking not prove available on-site, then it might leave an additional charge in your agreement.

Is there a green room available for musicians?

Musicians require a private space where they can peacefully prepare for their performance without disrupting the wider event. A dedicated ‘green room’ may not always be a prerequisite, however, be sure to ask your venue for a room that can offer the same benefits.

5 Reasons to Have Live Music at Your Next Corporate Event

March 2, 2022 By blueaven

If you’re planning a corporate event, one of the many decisions you will have to make is what kind of entertainment you will plan for your guests. While there are many options, if you want your event to truly make an impact and keep them engaged, live music is always the way to go! It creates a more powerful, shared connection, helping to bring employees together in a fun environment and build stronger relationships.

Here are 5 reasons from Blue Avenue Entertainment as to why you should choose live music for your next corporate event.

1. Engage Your Guests with an Interactive Performance

A live band is a great way to keep everyone in attendance focused on the event at hand. Live music is interactive and entertaining, with real musicians sharing their craft with your staff, who are watching and dancing on, staying in the moment, without having their attention drawn to something else. Live music draws the attention of everyone in the room, especially with a dancefloor located nearby, where the performers can gauge the audience’s moods and preferences, tailoring their song selections to fit.

The right live band can transport people through music. When people come together around their shared love of music, they feel an immediate connection with each other that’s hard to ignore. Their common ground is the band itself – and this creates something special that everyone who participates remembers long after the night ends.

2. Set the Tone of the Event

Live entertainment can be a great way to set the tone of the event and reflect your intentions for the evening. For example, if your event is meant to be a reward for all of the hard work your employees have put in over the past year, you could choose a fun, upbeat and fast-paced band that gets everyone up, moving and having a great time. For a more formal affair, perhaps such as an awards night, a big band setup could be hired to properly set the momentous occasion. Your entertainers of choice can match the theme of the event and keep the good vibes rolling for the duration of the day or evening.

3. No Setup or Extra Equipment Needed!

Live performers will come equipped with everything that is needed to keep your guests entertained for the whole event. You won’t need to worry about renting equipment, malfunctioning technology, or arriving ahead of time to prepare the facilities. The setup, tear down, and everything in between will be completely taken care of by the band and their crew, leaving you to enjoy your event along with everyone else.

4. Live Bands Can Offer Extra Services

Corporate events often have someone from senior management hosting the proceedings, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Since the frontman (or woman) will already be at the mic, for example, you can ask them to be the MC of the night, or ask them to make special announcements when needed. Oftentimes live performers will be able to provide extra lighting or other equipment to your event if needed, as they have plenty of it!

5. Boost the Morale of Your Team

Show your team that you care and appreciate all of the hard work they’ve been putting into the company. Sure, anyone can plug in their phone and hit play, but if you really want your employees to know that they deserve a special night, live music is an investment that has a clear return on investment. It boosts morale, and any manager knows that boosted morale equals higher productivity at work, so it’s a win-win!

Easy Corporate Dinner Party Entertainment Tips and Ideas

June 20, 2021 By blueaven

Okay, we know how much you want your big occasion to be the most memorable date on the calendar, but preparing for that is a whole other game. From decorations and finer details to keeping all guests happy and entertained – where do you even start? While we’re not party planners, you can never go wrong with ensuring you’ve nailed down your entertainment well in advance, catering to all types of tastes, interests and personalities.

So to help you with your process, here are some corporate entertainment ideas that will keep you on the right track, complete with entertainment options to keep smiles on dials.

corporate event ideas

A note on DIY corporate event entertainment

We hear you – you could just plug in a recommended playlist from Spotify, and away you go, but this is always a bit of a gamble. For example, the genres may not suit, you might end up with an app issue, or your subscription may not cater to eliminating those pesky ads (i.e. you need Premium). Alternatively, you can also opt to have a friend DJ your event and hope for the best, but you’re also relying on their tastes to accommodate your guest list.

Instead of running those risks, we recommend opting for live music or entertainment acts to keep guests tuned in and focused on your overall occasion. Of course, if you’re running a corporate event, this is even more important, and setting the scene is much trickier to do.

Live music acts are the easy, impressionable way to set the scene

Dinner parties and corporate-themed occasions call for high-class gigs that appeal to both the setting and the overall focus for the night. If you’re trying to make a good (or first) impression, this is where your entertainment options will need to stand out.

For this reason alone, we recommend investing in live music act hire – like those available through Blue Avenue Entertainment; choose from an appropriate band – like a duo act, solo performer or even a cover band – to jazz up your night without the stress.

The best part about choosing live performers is that they can be tailored to suit your exact needs, and will go the extra mile to ensure your event is met with fresh, modern, and experienced entertainment.

Tip: Sift through our list to find the perfect band for your big date. We provide high-calibre cover acts and talented performers for a variety of settings, including corporate contexts.

The versatility of a band

Bands tend to hit the mark because they’re able to appeal to so many personalities and tastes, as well as the added edge of delivering something recorded music just can’t do.

Able to bring plenty of atmospheric enjoyment to your event, these acts give guests an all-around experience that won’t quickly be forgotten. Watch the drummer set the beat and guitarists riff on spontaneity as the vocalists set those wicked vocals. It’s right there in the moment, and that’s always something guests love to see.

How Much Does a Band Cost for a Wedding in Australia?

March 17, 2021 By blueaven

The cost of tying the knot will play a key role in your big day. Quality live performances are a must – but how much should they cost?

Blue Avenue Entertainment has years of experience in the music industry, and we seek to provide premium performances at a reasonable price. The musicians booked by our agency offer professional services, so we’re well aware of the costs involved in hiring talent.

Before you make a booking, carefully read through our guide and consider the following points to ensure you plan for a fabulous event from the very beginning.

wedding band hire

How much is a band, and what am I paying for?

If you’re wondering ‘how much do wedding bands cost?’, live music payment varies from state to state. If you’re seeking to hire wedding bands in Melbourne or Sydney, the average cost will start at about $3,000 – $3,300 + GST for a 4-piece band, with $400 – $600 for each additional musician.

That generally includes three to four sets, an industry-standard meal and refreshment for acts longer than three hours, and all the lighting and equipment required to play the show. A small deposit is customary at the time of booking. In our case it’s 30%, with the rest to be paid at least 28 days prior to the booking date.

These musicians know exactly how to create the right atmosphere for the night, working together to produce a flawless performance. Seasoned artists, like the ones represented by our agency, play perfectly at this level, and range from three piece to five piece bands.

Be wary of calculating value for money based upon the members in the group. This is not always a good indicator of the quality you’ll receive for the cost. Instead, ask us about what each act offers to clarify what you’ll receive for the payment you make.

How much are wedding bands? Ask the right questions

Whether you wish to hear one of the Blue Avenue wedding bands in Melbourne or elsewhere, it’s important to be informed about what your package contains.

The main aspects to consider are:

  • Travel time
  • Start and end times
  • Equipment costs
  • The day and season when you’re making your booking

Travel time can add up

If the band you choose is local, it’s unlikely that they’ll require additional payment for travel. For venues that are further away, though, that may be the case.

When asking ‘how much does it cost to hire a band?’, it’s always worth asking whether this is a factor within your quoted price, and at times this can make quite a big difference.

Musical style and genre

Selecting the right musical style and genre is essential to creating the perfect atmosphere for your wedding. Whether you envision a classical, jazz, rock, pop, or eclectic musical ambiance, it’s crucial to choose a band that specialises in or can adapt to your preferred genre.

Consider your personal musical preferences and those of your guests when making this decision. A band that can cater to a diverse range of tastes may be ideal if your guest list includes individuals with varying musical interests.

Finding a band that aligns with your chosen style ensures that the music complements the overall theme and ambiance of your wedding, making it a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Logistics

Clear communication about logistics is crucial when hiring a band for your wedding. Discuss important details such as setup and soundcheck times, equipment requirements, and any specific space needs with both the band and your chosen venue.

Knowing when the band will arrive for setup ensures that they have ample time to prepare and perform soundchecks to guarantee the best audio quality. Additionally, understanding their equipment requirements helps you coordinate with the venue to provide the necessary resources.

By addressing logistics thoroughly, you can ensure a seamless and well-organised performance that enhances the overall experience for you and your guests.

Be mindful of hours

Our performers are dedicated to providing the best entertainment on the night, and will stay within a reasonable timeframe. Other bands, however, may have strict start and finish times. Usually, this is from 6:00-11:00 or so, and may incur additional fees if they’re asked to stay longer.

Ask about maintenance fees

The equipment brought by our musicians to your venue is their own, and is of the best quality. In order to maintain that quality, fees are often factored into their overall pricing.

You’re more than welcome to ask if this is the case with an act that appeals to you, and we’ll let you know if so.

Plan for the season ahead

Summer months and the holiday season are always busy, and as a result, functions booked at that time of the year incur a premium fee.

If your budget is less accommodating, consider planning your special occasion mid-week or in the off-season, and you may be able to secure a discounted deal.

Check reviews and references

Before booking a band for your wedding, take the time to read reviews for the band. You can also view some of their performances on their individual profile pages at our website. This can provide valuable insights into the band’s overall performance quality.

Checking references allows you to directly connect with couples who have hired the band in the past. You can ask about their experiences, whether the band met their expectations, and if they encountered any issues. This research will help you gauge whether the band is a good fit for your wedding and whether they align with your musical preferences.

Backup plan

When planning your wedding, it’s essential to have contingencies in place, including a backup plan for unforeseen circumstances that may affect your band’s performance. Discuss this with the band to understand how they handle situations such as illness or equipment failure.

Ask if the band has backup musicians or equipment readily available to ensure that your wedding day runs smoothly without disruptions. Having a backup plan in place provides peace of mind.

Beautiful memories are priceless

While cost is always a factor for weddings, finding the right musicians for the event is an invaluable investment. The memories they create are priceless, and stay with you forever.

Blue Avenue is here to connect you with the very best talent, working with you and your budget to make the perfect match. From there, all that’s left to do is contact our friendly booking managers and secure the sound to accompany you down the aisle.

How to Book a Singer for your Private Event

March 17, 2021 By blueaven

Hiring professional musical talent can be a complex process. Blue Avenue Entertainment was formed to make that process as easy as possible in order to ensure your special occasion goes well.

Our vocalists are highly experienced, professional event and wedding singers with a calibre that shines at performances at most sought-after venues. Requests fill up fast, and it takes time for our musicians to prepare for a flawless performance.

To assist you in creating the ultimate experience at your wedding or corporate function, our booking guide is a must-read!

wedding bands

Keep the following points in mind as you sample the work of our vocalists, and be prepared to bring out a brilliant atmosphere on the day.

Every booking starts with the basics

In the world of music, time and place are vital. For any event singer placement – be it for a corporate entertainment or a birthday party – we require confirmed times, agenda and a non-refundable 20% deposit to secure your live show.

This is an essential factor for all performances across Australia’s live music scene, and provides the peace of mind that your artist will be there on the day.

If an event is more than three hours long, please be sure to also accommodate a main meal and refreshment for our performers. This is an industry-standard practice, and keeps our vocalists energised for the entertainment ahead.

Be sure to share your program

Every show is based around the program at hand. For our artists, this usually consists of up to four 40 minute sets, all of which are customised to suit the agenda of the day or night.

The wedding singers and vocalists we represent always deliver and are seasoned experts in their fields. Their unique voices are specialised and suited to different genres. Popular requests can be found on each artist’s profile, with plenty of opportunity to align with your activities.

If there is a particular track that you’d like to hear, please let us know in advance. Many of our singers are happy to learn new songs specially for you, and require time to learn, rehearse and perfect the pieces for a polished performance.

The little details count

Our vocalists are masters at music and setting the tone of the event. They read the crowd and interact with them, lifting the mood of the moment.

Vocalists can do far more than just sing if given extra information. The background story behind your wedding or corporate function has an influence on the tone, mood and vibrancy of the day.

This is especially vital if you’re booking a group or singer to be an MC at your gathering, where announcements are made. Many artists offer this service for an additional fee, and require a little extra insight to prepare for their role, along with your comprehensive program.

Please let us know if you’d like to book this service when you request an artist, and we’ll pass the details on in the lead-up to your big day.

Book your boutique experience with confidence

The beauty of music is that it ties people, activities and unforgettable moments all together. Events come to life with the sound of fantastic vocals and instruments filling the space.

Here at Blue Avenue Entertainment, we love to lend our professional talent to the cause! With our guide to securing Melbourne’s best live performances at your next corporate entertainment event or celebration, we empower you to easily attain the best acts in Australia’s entertainment business.

Act on this guide and don’t hesitate to ask us any further questions – we’re well seasoned in the world of events and can offer useful tips to help you create lasting memories for all in attendance.

Each set will start at your cue – but the emotions and moments it inspires linger long after our professionals have sung their very last verse.

Why Should you Choose a Cover Band for Your Wedding?

May 18, 2020 By blueaven

From the dreamy, serene vibes of your ceremony, through to the unforgettable moments that your reception carries afterwards – there’s so much to look forward to when it comes to your wedding day. But if there’s one challenge that can cause a significant amount of stress in the lead up, it’s establishing who’s responsible for entertaining guests on the night. Will you choose an MC to take the lead or opt for the best cover band going around?

How do you even know where to start?

Experience is key

Remember that at the core of your special day is the experience that comes with it – and not just for you and your partner. Your guests will remember this for years to come, so it’s worth putting in the time and energy into researching who is best suited to take on the role for your musical needs.

Cover bands offer a flexible, well-rounded option for couples looking for entertainment that a majority of crowds will enjoy. Able to deliver acts featuring well-known anthems or specific genres, they’re the perfect choice if you need to preoccupy a range of age groups. This way, the experience won’t get lost on any of your guests, and they’ll each have a moment of their own to enjoy.

Most notably, recorded music just doesn’t do the environment and mood justice, especially when it comes to celebrating a wedding. Bands that offer exceptional live talents give you the very best experience possible.

Crowd interaction

Cover bands are known for their ability to get everyone involved – even introverts. Don’t let your guests shy away from the fun and let your music act take the lead instead. They won’t be able to resist the beats anyway.

Classics guarantee success

You can never go wrong with a band playing all the right classics and anthems to get the party going. From dance-driven tunes – like Dancing In The Street – through to some good, old Jimmy Barnes – no one can resist a dancefloor-pumping session when there are all-round winners being blasted out. Cover bands are exceptionally great at adding to this vibe, often equipped to take on audience requests as well.

How to choose a cover band

If you’re keen to have a band take care of the entertainment at your reception, here are a few things to keep in mind when making a decision about who to choose:

  • Budget: Will the group you have in mind cater to your budget range?
  • Availability: Can you lock them in for your set date and make sure they will show up on the day?
  • Communication: Who can you contact if you have concerns or issues, especially on the day of?
  • Genre: Can they cater to the exact genre you have in mind and will it suit the tone of the event itself?
  • Experience: What does their history in the industry look like? Make sure you ask plenty of questions about their portfolio.

Looking for a cover band for your wedding? Get in touch with Blue Avenue now.

I've used this group for an event two years in a row. Anthony was great to work with, very professional and flexible with our needs. I would recommend!

Working with Anthony was an absolute breeze. We were privileged enough to have House of Soul play for our wedding and they were beyond fantastic. Ricky, Carla and the band had everyone dancing, engaged and in awe of their talent. Not only are they talented but they are beautiful people. From the moment we got in contact with Anthony we knew we had made a great decision. He had everything under control and was liaising with the venue to ensure a perfect night. We couldn’t recommend enough. We are thinking of the next event we can quickly organise just to do it all again!

My partner and I booked Downtime band for our wedding through Blue Avenue Entertainment in March this year and were absolutely thrilled with them. Anthony (the manager) was very accommodating, friendly and professional, and a very efficient communicator which made the booking process very stress-free which we were so grateful for during our wedding planning! The band were absolutely incredible - really gifted at what they do and they really understood the vibe we were going for - the set list they put together was perfect. So many of our guests gave us feedback on how fantastic the band was, and everyone was up and dancing which really made our night. I’m so glad we decided to book with them and highly recommend them!

We booked a band via Blue Avenue Entertainment for our wedding. I am so glad that we did! Anthony (the manager) was great. He was very organised and easy to communicate with. When the band we had booked cancelled 8 weeks out from the wedding, Anthony very swiftly found a replacement band that were even better than the original! I really recommend booking via Blue Avenue Entertainment. Thanks Anthony!

OMG what a treat it was to have Downtime at a recent wedding I was photographing! Their music was the perfect addition to the reception :) The band members are incredibly talented! They were a hit with the guests and I loved capturing the joy and energy they were giving off. They were also super friendly and easy to work with, making my job as a photographer a breeze! I highly recommend these guys for any events :)
